Mary Esther is located on the Santa Rosa Sound, which is an Island extending from Pensacola to Destin, Florida. Okaloosa Island is the eastern most end of this Island, just across the bridge from Destin. While both Destin and Pensacola are more popular destinations, real beach lovers will appreciate the quality and serenity of the Gulf Islands National Seashore running the length of the island called Santa Rosa Sound. Given its proximity to the Santa Rosa Sound, Mary Esther residents and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy water-based activities such as boating, skiing, fishing, riding wave runners or just taking a leisurely swim.
Lapped by clear warm water and kissed by the sun, the small City of Mary Esther beckons residents and visitors to experience the beauty of Florida's Panhandle. Small towns dotting the waterfront make the most of this location by offering water-based tourism. Mary Esther is a lovely City, and it is easy to work up an appetite touring attractions in and around Mary Esther, and then escape the heat in to do some eating and shopping.
Much like its neighbors in Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther also boasts a large military presence, given its proximity to Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base. Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field are the largest employers in Okaloosa County. Eglin is home to the 96th Test Wing and encompasses more than 300,000 acres of land. Hurlburt Field is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), the 1st Special Operations Wing (1 SOW), the USAF Special Operations School (USAFSOS) and the Air Combat Command’s (ACC) 505th Command and Control Wing. Mary Esther also boasts a large military contractor work force.
Mary Esther boasts some of the state's best schools, a low unemployment rate and a second-to-none workforce needed for businesses looking to relocate or expand.
